Program Description

Event Details

In partnership with the Dubuque Museum of Art, former library director Susan Henricks will lead an in-person book discussion of The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien at Carnegie-Stout Public Library at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien (1990) is an acclaimed collection of interconnected fictional stories about an American platoon fighting in the Vietnam War. Copies of The Things They Carried will be available to check out from Carnegie Stout Public Library beginning in early November.

A few weeks before the in-person book discussion, on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, the Dubuque Museum of Art and Carnegie-Stout Public Library hosted a live Q&A on Zoom with author Tim O'Brien and filmmaker Aaron Matthews. The pair talked about their new documentary film, The War and Peace of Tim O’Brien (2021), and answered viewers' questions in real time. A video of this event is available at youtu.be/JvGGHG8npc0.

The in-person November 30 book discussion is free to attend, but advanced registration and COVID waiver forms are required. Masks are required at the in-person discussion, and seating will be limited.

These programs are a part of the Dubuque Museum of Art exhibition, Vietnam: The Real War, which is open from November 13, 2021 to February 6, 2022. For more details, please visit dbqart.org/vietnam-the-real-war.
