Who Picked This Book? Book Club is for adults ages 18+. This month we will be discussing The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers.

Published in 1940 when the author was just 23 years old, it went on to become a classic work of American fiction and an exemplar of the Southern Gothic literary style. It centers around John Singer, a deaf-mute, who just relocated to a mill town in 1930s Georgia, and the residents who are drawn to him for his kind, sympathetic nature. Through these disparate characters' interactions with Singer, the book explores many themes including loneliness, class conflict, racial injustice, and loss of innocence.
