Political intrigue, assassination and the aftermath. The tale has plenty of drama, yet what registers most strongly is the battle of ideas: tyranny vs democracy, performance vs rhetoric, perception vs reality. The titular character is killed before the midpoint of the play, but his specter haunts the play.
