Program Description

Event Details

Join the author of the book Doctors and Distillers on Zoom as he traces the overlapping history of alcohol and medicine from nutritional beer consumed in ancient Egypt up through high-proof hand sanitizer used to thwart Covid. Cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Gin & Tonic, and Gimlet were medicinal drinks once upon a time. Attendees will learn how the contents of our medicine and liquor cabinets were, until surprisingly recently, one and the same.

Camper English is a cocktails and spirits writer and speaker who has covered the craft cocktail renaissance for over 15 years, contributing to publications including Popular Science, Saveur, Details, Whisky Advocate, and Drinks International. With a background in physics and a focus on the nerdy side of mixology, he has studied everything from the history of carbonation to the science of clear ice cubes, which he wrote about in his most recent work The Ice Book.

Attendees must register for this event and can join from their personal devices or come to the library auditorium to watch on the projector screen. A link to join the Zoom room will be sent out on the day of the program.
