Program Description

Event Details

More than six million Americans live with some form of dementia which impacts more than just their memory. Join us at this hands-on workshop to learn more about what dementia is, how it affects the brain, and what you can do to help the people in your life living with dementia. This workshop will include a lecture and the opportunity to simulate how dementia changes your perceptions and relationship with the world. Registration is required as space is limited.

The Dementia Simulation Experience is a powerful educational tool designed to help individuals better understand the complex effects of dementia. This interactive experience allows participants to gain valuable insights into the daily challenges faced by those with dementia, while also learning how to effectively communicate and provide care. Participants will take turns role-playing as individuals with dementia and as caregivers or family members, practicing empathy, patience, and communication skills in various scenarios.

This program is provided by Stonehill Communities of Dubuque and will be led by Dementia Friends Champion Nancy Zachar Fett, LMSW, a professor of social work at Loras College. Space for this event will be limited and registration is required. Repeat sessions are planned for February 3, March 3, and April 7.
