Celebrate Black History Month with Art @ your library® on Friday, February 2, 2024 with an opening reception for artist Gail Chavenelle from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Sculptor Gail Chavenelle features her Black History is America History exhibit, funded by the City of Dubuque’s Creative Empowerment Sub-grant Program.
Meet the artist and enjoy music written by Black composers as you view the show at the opening.
Chavenelle is best known for her inclusive, stylized figure sculptures made from steel. This show, celebrating Black history and featuring 27 metal sketch designs across seven themes, including Chavenelle’s interpretation of embracing Black history, aims to impact the visitor and offer opportunity for reflection as they view each piece.
Visitors will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite design. Chavenelle hopes to find funding for a 7-foot public sculpture of the most popular piece that she will create for a future permanent display for the community of Dubuque.
Enjoy the unique show that is free and open during regular library hours through March 25, 2024. For more information, contact us at carnegiestout.org or 563-589-4313.
Every other month the Library matches two dimensional and three dimensional artists for a display in the historic rotunda area. All sales benefit local artists and the continuation of the Art @ your library® program.
